Out and About in the Dordogne

My wonderful part of France attracts hundreds of thousands of holiday-makers every year, and it is no wonder that many clients choose to call this place home.

The culture and climate also makes the Dordogne the perfect place for a holiday home or a Chateau investment.

The ease of travel from the local airports of Bergerac and Bordeaux – not to mention the TGV high speed train link direct to Paris – make international connections quick and easy.  A new tram link now connects the centre of Bordeaux to the airport – which takes less than 30 minutes.

Clients often ask me what attracts people to the area; so I thought I would share my near 20 year experiences with you and give you an idea of the sights and activities near Bergerac and the surrounding area.

A fine example of Bergerac Architecture

Restaurant:

My favourite restaurant has to be the wonderful Ô Petit Gavroche in the centre of Montpon-Mensterol.  You can find their menus and contact info here: https://www.facebook.com/opetitgavroche/

The chef is fantastic and the front of house staff welcoming.  I recall an wonderful entrée of a savoury Pannacotta with fresh ginger and prawns…wow.  I would highly recommend making a reservation.

Kids’ Activities:

A fantastic out-door zip-lining centre in a pine forest 10 minutes from Bergerac. A great way of keeping the children entertained, and in the shade, and even a great work-out for Mum and Dad.  The novice stages are good for small kids, while the senior stages are used for practice by the military – so something for everyone!

Historic Chateau:

The historic Chateau de Bridoire can trace its origins all the way back to the 12th Century.  Visitors are allowed to explore the castle and its grounds, and the owners often organise activities during the summer.  Only 15 minutes from Bergerac, well worth spending an afternoon soaking up the atmosphere.

Golf/Hotel:

The lovely Chateau de Vigiers has be one of the prettiest golf courses in France.  With a 4* star hotel and bistro and restaurant, Vigiers attracts visitors from all over the world.  Within 15 minutes of Bergerac centre, an excellent way to spend a day, an evening or a week!

Wine Tasting:

Nearly all of the hundreds of wine-producing Chateaux in Bergerac offer tasting and wine tours, but I thought I would make a special mention of the co-operative at Sigoulès.  The welcoming shop can introduce you to many of the local wine-producers in the area, and the prices are astonishingly good.  They have a fin section of organic wines, Reds, Rosés, Whites and dessert wines…and a range of sparkling wines for special occasions.

In the next blog we will be looking at schools, shopping and more lovely restaurants!
